Can anyone help me with formatting HD as FAT32 on Mac?

Whenever I try to format my HD as FAT32 by going to Disk Utility, then the Erase tab, choosing MS-DOS System then hitting "Erase", it doesn't seem to work. It simply does not work. The computer only processes it to a certain point then stops. What am I supposed to do? Can someone help me at all? Thanks
