Batch files suck... Why cant i run them?

ok... this is like the SIXTH time ive asked... nobody has helped... everytime i try to run a MS-DOS batch file, or something that ends in .bat, the cmd box opens for a split second, and then closes along with everything i already had opened. Seriously ANYTHING that is "run.bat, or startserver.bat" or anything that is a batch file wont open... well t opens but yeah, it closes so fast you only have time to see the outline of the cmd box. This also happens when i try to right click, and edit it. HELP! if you want to know i am trying to make a runescape and/or minecraft private server. I just cant run them because the stupid batch files are stupid... help please? (not tryin to be rude...)
